THE ANOINTING OF KINGS AND HIGH PRIESTS
The ceremonial procedure by which Moses
anointed Aaron became the pattern
for the consecration of high priests.
In the 15th-century German engraving below,
Aaron is in bishop's robes.
Saul was anointed king in the traditional way
by the pouring of oil onto his head
from an anointing horn such as the one shown here,
which is Syrian in style and probably dates
from the 16th century BC.
The anointing signified that the king had been chosen by God.
Hebrew monarchs were considered to be earthly reprentatives of God,
but many pagan rulers saw themselves as direct descendants
of their deity.
After Saul was anointed by Samuel, as depicted in
this Gothic relief from Freiburg Cathedral,
it seems that he was in a state of ecstasy and
behaved in the same manner as
the prophets he met at Gibeah.
His unusual behaviour caused considerable surprise,
and the question that was asked at the time,
"Is Saul also among the prophets?"
later became a proverbial expression of astonishment.
David is seen stealing the spear and water jar
from the side of the sleeping Saul
in this drawing by Gaetano Gandolfi (1734-1802).
David could easily have killed Saul
at this point, but he refrained because he recognized
that the life of the anointed king was sacrosanct.
DAVID
1Sa 16:13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil,
and anointed him in the midst of his brethren:
and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward.
So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.
The story of Nadah and Abihu
demonstrated the holiness of God
by showing that he could only be
approached through a strictly
defined ritual.
Any deviation from this
was deemed unlawful.
Even as sons of Aaron, and therefore members
of the priesthood, Nadah and Abihu were not
exempt from God's strict enforcement of his laws.
Their punishment is depicted in the
17th-century etching above.
It is thought, from the injunction
following the story, that the two men had officiated
whilst under the influence of alcohol.
